Frankenstein (2025) Review: When Science and Grief Collide

What if the power to create life came with terrifying consequences? Frankenstein is a 2025 American gothic horror and drama directed by Guillermo del Toro, starring Mia Goth, Oscar Isaac, and Jacob Elordi. The film follows Elizabeth, a brilliant scientist driven by grief and curiosity, who attempts to push the boundaries of life and death. When her experiment goes horribly wrong, the consequences spiral into horror and moral chaos. Mia Goth gives a strong performance as Elizabeth, showing both her smarts and her struggles, while the movie explores how ambition and grief can lead to dangerous choices.

Story Overview

Elizabeth begins her research with what seems like a clear scientific goal: to overcome the limits of death. Her experiments look successful at first, but as the being she creates starts exhibiting its own emotions and impulses, everything changes.

Tension grows as Elizabeth realizes she may have unleashed something she doesn’t fully understand or control. The dynamic between her, the creature, and the people around her creates an atmosphere thick with unease and uncertainty. Rather than relying on jump scares, the film uses its setting, character interactions, and eerie visuals to build dread slowly and effectively.

Beyond the horror, Frankenstein shines by exploring the human cost of obsession and ambition. Elizabeth’s story goes beyond science by showing the pain, mistakes, and hard lessons that come from reaching too far and meddling with forces that she can't fully control.

My Thoughts

What I Liked

  • Performances: Jacob Elordi as the Creature, Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, and Mia Goth as Elizabeth. I think they did a great job making the characters feel emotional and believable.

  • Cinematography: The dark, gothic visuals, especially the lab, are haunting and draw you into the story.

  • Story & Theme: Focus on character connections, loneliness, and responsibility.

  • Connection to the Original: The film stayed true to the original Frankenstein story. While it added modern visuals and updated scenes, the main plot, characters, and themes from Mary Shelley’s novel were still intact. Watching it felt like seeing the classic story come to life in a fresh, modern way.

What I Didn’t Like

  • Slow Build: Some scenes with long dialogue were hard to stay engaged with.

  • Underused characters: A few side characters could have had more screen time.

  • Scare Factor: It wasn’t very scary. I expected more thrilling moments, but the emotional drama made up for it.

My Rating

★★★★☆ (4/5 stars)

Frankenstein (2025) is a breathtaking and emotionally powerful retelling of the classic story. Guillermo del Toro brings the world to life with beautiful visuals, intense suspense, and unforgettable characters. The film shows both the monster’s struggle and Dr. Frankenstein’s tragic choices, helping the audience understand their pain and motivations. The story is easy to follow, the horror is intense, and the performances feel completely real. Every scene is alive with tension and emotion, making this film a must watch.
