What would happen if a guy who avoids responsibility suddenly has to raise a child? Big Daddy (1999), directed by Dennis Dugan, is a comedy starring Adam Sandler, Joey Lauren Adams, Jon Stewart, and Rob Schneider. The story follows Sonny Koufax, a laid back and immature man living an easy life in New York. What starts as a funny and chaotic situation slowly turns into something more meaningful, as Sonny begins to learn about responsibility, family, and growing up in ways he never expected.

Story Overview

Sonny Koufax is a carefree guy living in New York City that avoids responsibility and enjoy his relaxed lifestyle. He spends most of his time hanging out, doing the bare minimum, and not worrying too much about his future. However, his life suddenly changes when a young boy named Julian shows up at his apartment after being left behind by his father.

When Sonny realizes the boy has been abandoned, he impulsively decides to take care of him. He wanted to prove to his girlfriend that he can be responsible. At first, Sonny has no idea how to be a parent, which leads to many funny and chaotic situations as he tries to figure things out. His unusual parenting style often causes problems but also creates many humorous moments.

As time goes on, Sonny begins to form a real bond with Julian and slowly learns what it means to care for someone else. Through this experience, he starts to understand responsibility, love, and the importance of family. Along the way, Sonny’s interactions with friends, lawyers, and Julian’s father bring both funny moments and problems while also showing how he slowly becomes more caring and responsible.

My Thoughts

What I Liked

  • Performances: Sandler is both funny and surprisingly touching, making Sonny likable even when he’s immature. The kid is adorable makes the emotional moments feel real.

  • Humor: The movie has plenty of laugh out loud moments, from slapstick gags to clever one liner.

  • Heartwarming Moments: Beneath the comedy, there are real lessons about love, family, and growing up.

What I Didn’t Like

  • Repetitiveness: Some of the comedy feels repeated but still funny

My Rating

★★★★☆ (4/5 stars)

Big Daddy is a funny, heartwarming comedy that shows Adam Sandler at his classic best. It mixes silly humor with surprisingly genuine emotional moments that makes it more than just a typical 90s comedy. I wasn’t sure I wanted to watch the movie at first because I expected it to be boring, especially since I’m not usually a big fan of comedies. However, the movie is entertaining from start to finish, it kept me engaged with its mixed humor which makes it impossible to not enjoy every scene. I liked how it had both silly parts and touching moments. It made me laugh so much and I really enjoyed it. I would highly recommend this movie. Adam Sandler is probably one of the best comedy actors out there.
