Run
Run (2020) Review: A Tense Thriller With a Twisted Mother‑Daughter Secret
How far would a mother go to control her child—and how far would the child go to escape. Run (2020) is a psychological thriller directed by Aneesh Chaganty, starring Sarah Paulson and Kiera Allen. Chloe Sherman (Allen), a teenager in a wheelchair, is homeschooled by her seemingly devoted mother, Diane (Paulson). At first, Chloe trusts her mother’s strict care, but hidden pills and strange clues make her question everything. The film keeps you on edge, showing trust, lies, and a dark secret that puts Chloe in danger. Paulson is perfectly creepy as the controlling Diane, and Allen’s performance makes you feel every moment of Chloe’s fear and discovery.
Story Overview
Chloe Sherman’s life is tightly controlled by her mother, Diane. She is confined to a wheelchair, takes daily medications, and has never questioned her routine until she discovers a strange prescription that doesn’t add up. That small discovery sets her on a path of suspicion and fear.
As Chloe pieces together the truth, what begins as curiosity turns into a fight for her own freedom. The movie builds tension with Chloe trying to outsmart her mother and overcome physical and psychological obstacles. Rather than relying on supernatural scares, Run uses real‑world fear manipulation, control, and isolation to keep viewers on edge.
At its core, Run isn’t just a thriller but it also about finding independence, uncovering hidden truths, and confronting the person who’s supposed to protect you but might be the one putting you in danger.
My Thoughts
What I Liked
Performances: Kiera Allen made Chloe’s fear and determination feel real. Sarah Paulson was unsettling as Diane, making every interaction feel intense.
Suspense & Story: The movie kept me on edge with its realistic psychological suspense. I liked the themes of independence and uncovering the truth.
What I Didn’t Like
Predictable parts: Some parts were easy to guess. The movie also mostly takes place in one house which made it feel a little slow at times. I wish there were more scene changes, and the relationship between Chloe and her mother could feel a bit overwhelming.
My Rating
★★★★☆ (4/5 stars)
Run is a gripping thriller that keeps you invested in Chloe’s fight for freedom. Kiera Allen delivers a performance that makes you feel every moment of fear and frustration, while Sarah Paulson convincingly portrays a mother whose care may be dangerous. The movie slowly unravels its secrets, letting the suspense build naturally rather than relying on jump scares. Some parts are a bit predictable, and the story mostly stays in one house, but the focus on psychological manipulation, trust, and independence makes it stand out. It’s a movie that makes you think about how control can be hidden behind love, and it leaves a lasting impression long after the credits roll.
